Be welcome at my exhibition showing my latest Flower Portraits.
In this series, I paint dahlias grown in my own garden, translating their beauty into compositions that reference the old masters while remaining distinctly contemporary. By revisiting the floral still life, I hope to shift its traditional perception — not as a “light” or fragile subject, but as one of strength, presence and timelessness.
Each work begins with a deliberate process: selecting the flowers and glassware, then building a carefully staged, almost theatrical setup. I experiment with natural and coloured light, reflections and materials to create unexpected effects. When the balance feels right, the composition becomes the foundation for the painting.
Shadows play a central role — sometimes sharp, sometimes soft or doubled — adding movement and tension between depth and flatness. Scale, colour and fine detail work together to give the flowers a vivid, sculptural energy, as if illuminated from within.
‘Sprezzatura’, a Renaissance term coined by Castiglione, describes “the art of appearing effortless.” It reflects the heart of this series: paintings that may seem spontaneous, yet arise from focus, intention and time.
