‘Zomerweelde’

19 - 22 September 2024, Castle of Belsele

In this series, I created compositions using Dahlias from my own garden. Mesmerised by their beauty and grandeur, my goal was to capture them in a way that is a tribute to the old masters, while remaining contemporary and personal; It is a balance of keen observation and creative interpretation. Though the theme seems lovely at first glance, I sought out compositions and colour schemes with a distinctive edge.

I tried to challenge myself and explored the impact of scale and fine detail, using a rich texture that makes the flowers leap from the canvas, as though bathed in light.
I played with striking contrasts between depth and flatness of the exaggerated shadows, with complementary and contrasting colours and with geometric compositions ... All this while maintaining my signature bright and unexpected palette, immortalising the flowers.
